# The issues shaping the future of energy in Chile.

We publish our reading on each of them and take part in the public conversation. Every piece carries its date and source.

## Our reading, issue by issue

### Storage

1. **Jul 15, 2026**: Storage's moat is no longer in the hardware. Anyone buying BESS in Chile over the next 24 months will have to learn to tell manufacturer tiers apart. But the real advantage is moving elsewhere: to the business model surrounding the asset.

### Cybersecurity

1. **Aug 31, 2026**: Grid cybersecurity: Chile's new standard reaches consultation as the sector already reports attacks. On August 28, Chile's energy regulator opened its electric-sector cybersecurity standard for public consultation, a process begun in 2021. A day earlier, the grid operator's official log recorded four events at two coordinated companies' facilities, self-reported by the companies as cyberattacks.
2. **Jun 5, 2025**: The ANCI deadline is a strategic opening, not just a compliance date. The convergence of NERC CIP with Chile's cybersecurity law is also a strategic opportunity. With EnergySage and AnguitaOsorio, we explore how robust cybersecurity can translate into better financing terms, PPAs, and M&A valuations.
3. **Jun 2, 2025**: Cybersecurity in energy assets: beyond regulatory compliance. The ransomware attack on a Colombian distributor — which left thousands unable to pay their bills — shows what's at stake: cybersecurity is no longer a regulatory cost — it's what determines which energy assets stay profitable and which become liabilities.

### Data centres

1. **Aug 18, 2026**: Courting the demand before defining how to connect it. Seven days apart, Chile's government convened the global data center industry and published a plan that projects that demand and reinforces the need to expand transmission. Both facts are public and official. What has not yet been defined is a framework specific to this kind of load.
2. **Jun 20, 2026**: Chile hasn't decided what kind of data center it wants. There are two data center models and they aren't compatible: one requires bulk transmission that will take five to six years; the other only needs contracts that don't yet exist. Infrastructure decisions are being made using the headline number.

### Capacity and prices

1. **Aug 7, 2026**: When the rule gets calculated before the parameters are published. 2026 will be calculated under a methodology whose parameters have yet to be published — and that year feeds the five-year average behind 2027's firm capacity (Potencia de Suficiencia). What's decided in October doesn't get corrected in November.
2. **Jul 30, 2026**: One blackout cost on the order of a year of capacity payments. The ISCI study on Chile's February 2025 blackout puts its economic cost at up to US$984 million — the same order of magnitude as what the system pays for capacity in a year. The study itself points to where the asymmetry lies.

### Resilience and operations

1. **Aug 10, 2025**: On site: a technical visit to CEME1, Generadora Metropolitana's solar plant. 882,000 panels across 435 hectares of the Atacama Desert. What a technical visit reveals about the operation of large solar plants.
2. **Apr 20, 2025**: Designing tomorrow's Chilean power system today. Chile's February 2025 nationwide blackout exposed an uncomfortable truth: the energy transition isn't enough if the system can't take a hit, adapt, and recover quickly. Three threats and four courses of action to make resilience a national priority.

### Technology and innovation

1. **Aug 1, 2025**: AI and cross-border collaboration will reshape Latin America's power markets. With the BESS del Desierto storage system, Chile is on track to reach in January 2026 a storage target set for 2030. With over 60% renewables in the mix, AI and cross-border collaboration — not just more batteries — are what's missing for a 24/7 emissions-free system by 2030.
2. **Mar 15, 2025**: What AI could actually do for Chile's power market after the blackout. Five ways artificial intelligence could create real value in Chile's power market, from local energy-trading platforms to storage-backed virtual power plants — some possible under today's rules, others requiring regulatory adjustments.
