On site: a technical visit to CEME1, Generadora Metropolitana’s solar plant

EnergySage made a technical visit to CEME1, Generadora Metropolitana’s flagship 480 MW project located in the heart of the Atacama Desert and inaugurated in July 2024.

Site visits are part of how EnergySage reads the system: the real-world operation of the facilities complements the data.

Beyond its numbers — 882,000 panels spread across 435 hectares (about 1,075 acres) — CEME1 stands out for strategic decisions that reflect engineering designed for a project of this scale:

  • East-west fixed-tilt racking: a solution that maximizes efficiency per hectare and simplifies the mechanical complexity of a solar plant at this scale.
  • Waterless robotic module cleaning: technology that cuts water use by 90% compared to similar plants, a decisive factor in a desert area like María Elena, where every drop counts.
  • Future storage integration: planning for 1.7 GWh of batteries shows a long-term vision toward firm generation.

What the visit makes it possible to anticipate

Directly observing how the infrastructure operates makes it possible to assess not just the infrastructure as it stands, but to anticipate the opportunities that will emerge once storage is fully integrated into the ecosystem. Today’s decisions — fixed structures, robotic cleaning, readiness for BESS — become sustainable competitive advantages over the asset’s operating life.

For companies developing projects of different scale, the question is how to plan for operations, cybersecurity, and the shift toward smart hybrid systems. Value creation lives in that strategic integration.

EnergySage thanks Generadora Metropolitana for including us in these technical visits. Projects like CEME1 are redefining Chile’s energy landscape and setting new operational benchmarks in the region.
